What is ShapeScan?
ShapeScan is a web-based tool that converts photos of real-world objects
placed on a printed marker sheet into true-scale outlines and simple 3D reference files.
The generated SVG, Fusion SVG, DXF, PNG, STL or STEP files can be used for laser cutting,
CNC machining, CAD reference and digital fabrication workflows.
Is ShapeScan free to use?
Yes. The free tier supports single-photo processing and a limited number of saved jobs.
Optional Premium monthly and lifetime plans add multi-object models, larger batches,
more saved jobs, no ads and priority processing. See the
current Plans page for exact limits.
How accurate are the generated files?
ShapeScan focuses on geometric accuracy. When photos are taken correctly,
a practical target is about ±1 mm for many workshop captures.
Final accuracy always depends on photography quality, machine calibration,
kerf compensation and material behaviour.
Do my photos leave my device?
Photos are uploaded to the ShapeScan server for processing and conversion.
Files are used only to generate the requested outputs and are not shared
with third parties.
Anonymous jobs are temporary and can be cleaned up automatically. Jobs saved to an
account can remain available up to that plan's saved-job limit, so you should delete
unwanted jobs and keep your own copy of important outputs.
Can I use ShapeScan for commercial work?
Yes. You are free to use files generated with ShapeScan for commercial,
industrial or professional projects, including selling products made
from the generated vectors.
ShapeScan does not claim ownership of your uploaded images or generated files.
What file formats does ShapeScan support?
ShapeScan currently supports exporting:
- SVG and Fusion SVG (for laser cutters, vector editors and CAD import)
- DXF (for CAD and CAM software)
- PNG (for raster previews and masks)
- STL and STEP (for 3D reference, printing and CAD workflows)
Is ShapeScan a replacement for CAD software?
No. ShapeScan is designed as a geometry capture and reference tool.
It excels at extracting accurate outlines from physical objects,
but detailed design work, constraints and assemblies are still best
handled in CAD software.
What kind of objects work best?
Flat or mostly planar objects with clear edges work best.
Good contrast between the object and the background improves results.
Transparent, glossy or flexible materials may require extra care
during photography.
Who is ShapeScan for?
ShapeScan is built for makers, CNC operators, laser cutting users,
designers and engineers who need a fast way to convert physical
objects into accurate digital outlines.
Who created ShapeScan?
ShapeScan was created and is maintained by Sérgio Cruz and Inês Machado.
It began with Sérgio's hands-on CNC and digital-fabrication workflow and continues to
evolve through workshop use and community feedback.
